The generic name of pop began in the 1950’s, a name under which commercial, chart-oriented music, aimed at the teenage market, erupted. Pop incorporated as “commercial music of a nation associated with Tin Pan Alley, musical theatre, the motion picture and rise of radio… black pop also known as race music or R&B…. and county pop which was favoured by American white south and southwest.” (Shuker page 258)
